Our Petersfield Dojo is the biggest of our clubs with the most diverse membership. We began in 2009 in Froxfield village hall and moved to The Petersfield School in 2013 when we outgrew the hall.

Our vision

Our principle is simple. Teach classes we would want to train in.

We respect the traditional formats of Kihon (Fundamental technique), Kata (Set Pattern) and Kumite (Sparring) but also utilize pad work, fitness drills and cross training from other disciplines.

You do not have to be fit or flexible to start as responsible karate should be for everyone.

We do not practice 'Non-Contact' karate as we believe that pressure testing is essential to gauge one's ability appropriately. Sparring and pair work is always responsibly managed and Ego has no place in our karate family.

Karate is not only about being able to fight, studied well it considers conflict de-escalation and awareness. Good karate is like a light switch and can be turned on and off as appropriate and when needed.

Instructors

Who teaches

Sensei Matt Powell in a red club jacket, arms folded, smiling

Sensei Matt Powell 5th Dan · Founder

Matt began karate in 1987 at Portsmouth Karate Club and grew up at Portchester Karate Club under Sensei O'Donnell. He has taught children since 2000, started the club in Froxfield village hall in 2009, and passed 5th Dan in May 2022.

Karate should encourage self-expression and diversity. Each generation should build on the lessons of the past but seek to refine, improve and develop. Karate needs to be relevant in the modern world, as a means of effective self-defense and a vehicle for self improvement and health.
Sensei Mike Smallpage

Sensei Mike Smallpage 3rd Dan

Karate for me is a tool to self discovery. It offers an opportunity for us all to look a little deeper within, exposing qualities we never knew we had and instilling us with new ones along the way.
Sensei Jon Watson in a fighting stance in white gi

Sensei Jon Watson 3rd Dan · Chief instructor, East Meon dojo

Sensei Wayne Lee

Sensei Wayne Lee 2nd Dan

Karate needs to be effective and training should be fun. It's no good just following and accepting anything and/or everything, ask questions and test, test, test and test it some more.

Testimonials

From parents, students and visiting instructors

Starting Karate with my daughter Nyah was one of the best decisions I've made! We joined 5 years ago when she was only just 5 and have not looked back since. Matt manages to always make his lessons fun and engaging whilst still teaching the core values of respect and discipline… Nyah's confidence in life has grown as a direct result of Matt's Karate teachings… It's not too early and it's not late, give it a go and you will never look back.

If you are looking for a natural teacher who can both instil discipline and have fun, create challenge and make that enjoyable then I cannot recommend Matt highly enough. He has a rare combination of humility and authority… The Petersfield Karate club upholds traditional standards in a modern way and has formed a community where I have seen my son grow and develop.

Matt Sensei's Karate is dynamic, technically excellent and highly effective. He excels across the full spectrum of the art of Shotokan Karate and this depth of knowledge is shown in his teaching… Take the first step, you won't be disappointed.
Adam Cockfield5th Dan (Total Shotokan Karate London)
Petersfield Karate is a fantastic club for families to join. I have been going with husband & my 2 boys for 5 years and enjoy it as much now as when I first started. It's a very welcoming club; people are very friendly and it has a great atmosphere.
Katherine ClayParent and Student (Brown & White Belt)
A warm welcome awaits anyone who enters the Dojo!… he has a gift for imparting knowledge, often with daft stories or songs to illustrate. Matt has an innate ability to make everyone part of the family (even spectators!).
